Chennai, 28th Nov. The deep depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal, located about 100 km east-northeast of Trincomalee, is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm in the next 12 hours, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai reported on Thursday.
The system is moving north-northwestwards, skirting the Sri Lanka coast. According to RMC, it is forecast to cross the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram on the morning of November 30. The storm is expected to bring strong winds of 50-60 kmph, gusting to 70 kmph.
Authorities in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are bracing for very heavy rain as Cyclone Fengal approaches, with the possibility of its landfall near Chennai. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has already conducted inspections of vulnerable and low-lying areas in T.R. Patinam and Karaikal, focusing on risk assessment and safety measures.
The NDRF is continuing to monitor the situation, as the regions prepare for the heavy rains and potential flooding associated with the storm’s impact.
