Thiruvananthapuram, 30th May: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] on Friday announced M Swaraj as the Left Democratic Front’s (LDF) candidate for the upcoming by-election to the Nilambur Assembly constituency in Kerala’s Malappuram district.

CPI(M) state secretary M.V. Govindan made the announcement at a press conference following the party’s state secretariat meeting.

Swaraj, a prominent party leader and member of the CPI(M) state secretariat, previously served as an MLA representing the Thrippunithura constituency in Ernakulam from 2016 to 2021. Although he hails from Nilambur, he lost the 2021 election to Congress leader K Babu.

The Nilambur by-election is expected to be a closely watched contest, especially after the Congress declared Aryadan Shoukath, son of late Congress veteran and former Kerala minister Aryadan Mohammed, as its candidate.

The bypoll is seen as a test of strength for both LDF and UDF in Malappuram, a district known for high voter engagement and political significance in Kerala’s electoral landscape.
