A controversy has emerged in Kerala after a production house announced it was pulling its Malayalam movie from theatres, citing threats and disturbances created by certain groups. The film’s makers claimed they were targeted by individuals alleging the movie hurt religious sentiments, with threats issued to stop its screening.

Congress leader and former MLA V T Balram, vice president of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), questioned the motives behind the move. He suggested that the film’s withdrawal could be a marketing strategy for a movie that may have flopped or was on the verge of failing in theatres.

Balram expressed doubts over the credibility of the allegations, pointing out that there was no police report or investigation into any supposed threats. He also noted that no prominent individuals or organizations had raised concerns about ‘blasphemy,’ and no critical social media posts had surfaced regarding the film.

In a Facebook post, Balram criticized the use of religious sentiments for movie promotion, calling it a dangerous trend. He also warned that movie-makers should avoid following the example of political parties that exploit religion for votes, a path that, according to him, the state cannot afford.

The movie in question was released on November 22.
