Controversy Erupts Over Kannada Actor Darshan’s ‘Luxury Treatment’ in Bengaluru Jail

GG News Bureau
Bengaluru, 26th August. Images showing Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa, an accused in the Renukaswamy murder case, seemingly enjoying special privileges in Bengaluru’s Parappana Agrahara Central Jail have sparked a political storm. BJP leader R Ashoka has accused Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar of complicity, claiming that Shivakumar visited Darshan and assured him of assistance, including the provision of cigarettes, coffee, and narcotic substances within the prison.

Ashoka, who is also the Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Assembly, criticized the state government’s handling of the situation, alleging that the Congress administration is failing to maintain law and order. He demanded answers on how Darshan had access to a mobile phone that captured the controversial images, questioning the integrity of the prison system.

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi echoed these concerns, suggesting that the privileged treatment of Darshan was part of a strategy to destroy evidence and intimidate witnesses. The ruling Congress faced additional criticism from former ally Janata Dal (Secular). Ex-Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy highlighted that issues of preferential treatment for prisoners have been ongoing, suggesting a deeper systemic problem.

In response, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who is already under scrutiny for a separate corruption case, has pledged to investigate the matter. Seven prison staffers have been suspended, and further actions are being planned. Siddaramaiah has instructed Home Minister G Parameshwara to oversee the investigation and review the conditions in the prison.

The controversy centers around a photograph showing Darshan and other inmates in relaxed positions, with Darshan holding a coffee cup and smiling. The image, along with a video call footage, has drawn widespread criticism and calls for a thorough probe. The murder victim, Renukaswamy, was allegedly kidnapped and tortured by Darshan’s associates in retaliation for sending inappropriate messages to actress Pavithra Gowda. Renukaswamy’s body was discovered on June 9 in a stormwater drain.

The incident has intensified political and public scrutiny of prison conditions and the administration’s handling of high-profile inmates.
