President Murmu Marks 75 Years of the Constitution's Adoption, Highlights Its Enduring Relevance

New Delhi, 26th Nov. President Droupadi Murmu presided over the commemoration of 75 years since the adoption of the Indian Constitution in a ceremony held at the Central Hall of Parliament on Samvidhan Divas (November 26, 2024).

In her address, the President hailed the Constitution as the cornerstone of India’s democratic republic, ensuring dignity for individuals and the collective. She reflected on the historic adoption of the Constitution on this day in 1949, noting its roots in India’s freedom struggle and its ideals of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity.

“Our Constitution is a living and progressive document, capable of adapting to the changing needs of the times. It has been instrumental in achieving goals of social justice and inclusive development, while also defining India’s role as a global leader,” President Murmu stated.

A Call for Unity and Responsibility
The President emphasized the active role of the Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary in upholding Constitutional ideals, alongside the responsibility of every citizen to fulfill their Fundamental Duties. These include promoting unity, protecting the environment, and ensuring the dignity of women.

She commended legislative and judicial efforts in enhancing societal welfare and creating opportunities for all, especially marginalized communities. President Murmu also highlighted the need for collaboration between government branches to improve citizens’ lives.

Celebrating Constitutional Values
President Murmu noted the success of annual Samvidhan Divas celebrations, initiated in 2015, in raising youth awareness about the Constitution. She called on citizens to embody its ideals and work collectively toward building a developed India (Viksit Bharat) by 2047.

India’s Role on the Global Stage
The President also underscored India’s commitment to promoting international peace, as envisioned in the Constitution’s Directive Principles, lauding the country’s dual role as a leading economy and a “Vishwa-Bandhu” (global friend).

As the nation reflects on 75 years of Constitutional governance, the President urged citizens to honor the vision of the Constitution’s framers by advancing the principles of justice, equality, and fraternity for future generations.
