New Delhi, 19th Nov. The Congress on Tuesday slammed the BJP-led NDA government after several ruling coalition MLAs reportedly skipped a meeting convened by Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh claimed the “writing on the wall is clear” and questioned whether Union Home Minister Amit Shah is acknowledging the situation.
In a post on X, Ramesh highlighted that only 26 out of 60 NDA MLAs attended the meeting on Monday night, including four from the National People’s Party (NPP), which has already withdrawn support for the Chief Minister.
“The Union Home Minister, to whom the PM has abdicated responsibility for Manipur, needs to take note,” Ramesh remarked.
Amid escalating violence in Manipur, Ramesh criticized the BJP’s “double engine government” and demanded the resignation of both Shah and Biren Singh. The Congress also reiterated its demand for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Manipur and meet stakeholders ahead of the upcoming Parliament session on November 25.
Rising Violence and Political Unrest
Manipur has been reeling under ethnic strife since May, with over 220 fatalities and thousands displaced. Recent incidents include attacks on offices of the Congress and BJP, arson targeting the homes of BJP and Congress legislators, and clashes across the state.
An indefinite curfew remains in place in the Imphal Valley, while agitators have made repeated attempts to breach high-security areas, including Chief Minister Singh’s ancestral home.
The Congress accused the Centre of neglecting the crisis and failing to restore peace in the region. “From May 3, Manipur is burning, and the prime minister has neither visited the state nor addressed the concerns of its people,” Ramesh alleged.
Congress’ Demands
The Congress has called for:
- PM Modi’s visit to Manipur: To meet political parties, civil society groups, and displaced individuals.
- All-party consultations: Both at the state and national levels before the Parliament session.
- Resignations: Of Home Minister Shah and CM Singh for their alleged failure to manage the crisis.
The situation in Manipur remains precarious, with political tensions compounding the ongoing ethnic conflict.
