As the counting for the Delhi Assembly elections progressed, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate made it clear that her party is not responsible for ensuring Aam Aadmi Party’s victory.

“The onus of making the AAP win is not on the Congress… We will look for fertile political bastions and try to win these over. Delhi is a place where we have been in government for 15 years,” Shrinate told NDTV.

She dismissed suggestions that Congress should have aided AAP in its electoral battle and pointed to instances where AAP had contested against the Congress in states like Goa, Haryana, Gujarat, and Uttarakhand.

Shrinate’s remarks came as AAP, a key Congress ally in the INDIA bloc, struggled to secure a third consecutive term. Meanwhile, the BJP surged ahead, crossing the majority mark early in the day.

The Congress leader also addressed criticism of her party’s leadership in the INDIA alliance, which was formed to counter the BJP but has faced setbacks in multiple state elections since its inception.

Tensions between Congress and AAP had been evident ahead of the elections, with both parties exchanging barbs over governance and corruption allegations. Rahul Gandhi had criticized AAP on issues like the alleged liquor policy scam, while AAP accused Congress and BJP of being aligned against it.

As the results unfolded, the BJP maintained a comfortable lead, surpassing 50 seats in the 70-member Delhi Assembly, indicating a major political shift in the national capital.
