New Delhi, 8th Feb. Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a scathing attack on the Congress in his victory speech on Saturday evening, following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) triumph in the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections. Addressing jubilant party workers at the BJP headquarters, Modi accused the Congress of “stealing” agendas and voters from its allies and systematically “finishing them one by one.”
Labeling the Congress a “parasite party,” he mocked its inability to secure a single seat in Delhi for six consecutive major elections, both state and federal. “I have said before… the Congress is a parasite party. They take other parties with them whenever they are drowning. Their method is unique… they steal their agendas and then target their voters,” Modi said.
He further accused the Congress of undermining its regional allies, citing Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Jammu and Kashmir as examples. “It is clear… whoever holds Congress’ hands, their end is inevitable,” he declared. He also took aim at the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), branding it an extension of the Congress’ alleged disruptive politics, stating, “They want to bring anarchy… and AAP-da was trying to do the same.”
Modi’s remarks come at a time when the INDIA opposition bloc, led by the Congress, faces increasing uncertainty. The alliance, formed in June 2023 to challenge the BJP, has struggled to make a strong electoral impact. While the 2024 Lok Sabha elections saw the BJP held below the 300-seat mark, the opposition bloc has faltered in most subsequent state polls.
The Congress has particularly come under fire for failing to finalize seat-sharing agreements with key allies like AAP. Their inability to forge an alliance for the 2024 Haryana and 2025 Delhi polls—where their combined vote share could have challenged the BJP—has raised questions about the bloc’s viability.
While a functional opposition front could make elections more competitive, Modi’s BJP continues to demonstrate its electoral dominance, leaving little room for a fragmented opposition to pose a formidable challenge.
