New Delhi, 13th April. Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram stated today that his party is likely to win more seats in the upcoming elections than in 2019. He also predicted that the INDIA bloc would achieve a strong victory in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
In an interview with news agency PTI, Mr. Chidambaram also mentioned that Hinduism and Hindus are not under threat, and he believes that the BJP is deliberately trying to portray the entire Opposition as anti-Hindu to elevate PM Modi as the protector of Hindus.
He highlighted West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee as a significant player in the upcoming election, stating that her ability to maintain control in the state will bolster the INDIA bloc.
Chidambaram expressed confidence in the INDIA bloc’s success in Tamil Nadu, predicting that the Congress would gain more seats in Karnataka and Telangana. He also mentioned that the Congress governments in these states are popular and likely to secure more seats than in 2019.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress won 52 seats.
Chidambaram suggested that the Congress may perform better in the upcoming elections, citing positive reports about the INDIA bloc from states like Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Delhi.
He slammed PM Narendra Modi for accusing Opposition parties of practicing appeasement politics and labeling them as anti-Hindu, suggesting that this is a deliberate strategy by the BJP for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
Regarding Mamata Banerjee’s influence in the upcoming election, Chidambaram acknowledged her as a key player, emphasizing that her presence in West Bengal would strengthen the INDIA bloc.
Chidambaram also questioned the timing of the BJP’s revival of the Kachchatheevu issue, stating that the matter was resolved 50 years ago and wondering why PM Modi had not raised it in the past decade.
The Kachchatheevu issue involves a longstanding territorial and fishing rights dispute surrounding an island between Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka. It has become a contentious topic ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, with both the BJP and Opposition parties engaging in a war of words over the matter.
