Ahmedabad, 16th Nov. The Congress party on Monday appointed five poll observers to oversee the state elections.

Mukul Wasnik, AICC general secretary, will be the party observer for the South zone, headquartered in Surat, while Mohan Prakash will oversee the polls in the Saurashtra zone, headquartered in Rajkot.

Former Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan will be headquartered in Baroda and will oversee elections in the central region, while BK Hariprasad will be headquartered in Ahmedabad and will oversee elections in the north zone.

The fifth zonal observer will be Congress leader KH Muniappa.

The Gujarat assembly elections highlight a three-way contest between the ruling BJP, which has ruled the state for the past 24 years, the opposition Congress, and the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which has launched a high-pitched campaign.

Voting for the 182-member Gujarat Assembly will be held in two phases on December 1 and 5. The count of votes will be held on December 8.
