Bhopal, 6th Dec. A day after the Madhya Pradesh Election Commission announced the dates for panchayat elections to be held in three phases from January 6 to February 16, 2022, the Congress’ state unit on Sunday hit out at it. The opposition party accused the ruling BJP government of not following constitutional rules in the electoral process.
Congress said the state government is not adhering to the mandated constitutional rules of changing the rotation in the reservation of seats after every five-year term.
Congress raised the question that why Panchayat elections are being held in 2021-22 on the basis of reservation of 2014?
Expressing its concern over the issue, the Congress accused the BJP of suppressing the democratic rights of the citizens of the state.
Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister and State Congress President Kamal Nath said, “We have been demanding that Panchayat elections should be held in the state at the earliest, but it seems that the government is scared of these elections and does not want to hold elections.”
To ensure that elections are held under the new reservation and rotation policy of seats, the Congress is set to approach the Madhya Pradesh High Court on Monday.
Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Vivek Tankha said, “Many people have already opposed this move of the state government. Conducting elections without following the rotation in reservation is completely against the constitutional rights of individuals. Several persons have already filed petitions in various benches of the High Court and now on Monday a fresh petition in the same matter will be filed before the Jabalpur High Court bench.
Tankha said, Panchayat elections in MP are being held under strange legal circumstances, completely ignoring the procedure and provision of the constitution, the ordinance passed by the state government is a threat to the public.
Veteran Congress leader and two-time MP Chief Minister Digvijay Singh was the first to express his concern on the matter soon after the election schedule was announced on Saturday.
The elections to the Panchayat bodies in the state are pending since March 2020 due to the outbreak of Covid-19.
