New Delhi, 14th Dec. Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Saturday emphasized the urgent need for a systemic solution to tackle stubble burning, highlighting its grave environmental and social impacts.
Speaking at the National Energy Conservation Day Function 2024 at Vigyan Bhawan, he stated, “The National Capital suffers annually due to hazardous environmental conditions from stubble burning. We must innovate and find systemic solutions instead of leaving it to individuals. Our negligence is jeopardizing our health, work, and daily lives, especially for our children.”
Dhankhar stressed the shared burden of the climate crisis, saying, “Climate change obliterates social barriers—rich or poor, urban or rural. We either act together or perish together.”
Referring to India’s civilisational ethos, he described it as a “survival manual” for addressing the climate emergency.
“Our ancient texts like the Vedas, Puranas, Mahabharata, Ramayana, and the Gita offer invaluable wisdom on conservation as an integral part of life,” he added.
Drawing attention to constitutional responsibilities, Dhankhar cited Article 51A, which mandates environmental conservation as a fundamental duty. He urged citizens to prioritize their duties over rights in times of national challenges.
On resource consumption, he cautioned against wasteful practices, stating, “Energy and natural resources are collective assets of humanity. Responsible and optimal utilization must be our guiding principle.”
The event was also attended by Minister of State for Power Shripad Yesso Naik, Power Secretary Pankaj Agarwal, and other dignitaries.
