“Certification Halted Due to Threats”: Kangana Ranaut on Her Film Emergency

Mumbai, 30th August. Actress and first-time MP Kangana Ranaut announced on Friday that her upcoming film Emergency, in which she portrays former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, is still awaiting clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), contrary to rumors that it has been approved for release.

In a video message posted on X, Ranaut revealed that both she and members of the CBFC have been receiving threats, leading to a halt in the film’s certification process. “There are rumours that our film Emergency has got a censor certificate. It is not true. In fact, our film was cleared earlier but its certification has been stopped because of several threats,” she stated.

Ranaut further elaborated on the pressure they are facing to omit scenes depicting the assassination of Indira Gandhi, Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, and the Punjab riots. “I don’t know what we will show then, that there is a blackout in the film? This is an unbelievable time for me, and I am very sorry for this state of things in this country,” she lamented. Emergency was originally scheduled for release on September 6.

Earlier in the day, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) sent a legal notice to the CBFC, urging them to prevent the film’s release, citing concerns that it could “incite communal tensions” and “spread misinformation.” The notice claimed that the film portrays the Sikh community in an “unjust and negative light” and accused Ranaut of using the subject of the Emergency to target the Sikh community.

The controversy surrounding the film intensified after a video surfaced on social media showing a group of men threatening Ranaut over the film’s release. In response, the actor sought police protection. Various organizations, including the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, have demanded a ban on the film, alleging that it promotes an “anti-Sikh” narrative and misrepresents Sikhs as “separatists.”
