Centre Forms 5 Member Enforcement Task Force to Monitor Compliance Amid ‘Very Poor’ Air Quality in Delhi-NCR

New Delhi, 3rd Dec. Delhi-NCR Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court after the Supreme Court’s rebuke over the rising level of pollution. The affidavit says that a 5-member Enforcement Task Force has been constituted to ensure that its instructions are followed. Apart from this, 17 flying squads have also been formed.

During the hearing in this case on Friday, in response to the question of the court, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said that the number of flying squads will be increased from 17 to 40 and they will cover the entire NCR, not only Delhi.

The court also asked that if you close the thermal plot, then in such a situation will there be an alternative source of power supply so that this supply is not interrupted?

On behalf of the Delhi government, it has been said that the schools remained closed for 17 months, opened only for a few days in November. The court expressed displeasure over the reporting of a section of the media regarding the school shutdown in Delhi. The court said that knowingly or unknowingly a part of the media is doing such projects that we are villains who want to close the school, while the matter of closing the school and work from home was suggested by the Delhi government only.

Delhi government’s counsel Singhvi said that part of the media also reported that the court, which was unhappy with the work of the government, wanted to take up administrative responsibility as well. On this the court said that we did not say so! But what can be done. There is freedom of expression. Being a political party, you can refute it by holding a press conference, but the court cannot do anything in it.

Singhvi said that court reporting cannot be unbridled like this. This is different from political reporting. It has to be factual. The report of the Indian Express, which is different from other papers, is wrong. The court asked to ignore these things for the time being.

The Supreme Court expressed satisfaction over the formation of the task force. SC directed the Central and Delhi Government to implement the things written in the affidavit. It asked the lawyer of UP seeking permission to run the boiler, to go to the commission. The court accepted the state government’s demand for construction of hospitals in Delhi. The matter will be heard next Friday.
