New Delhi, 7th May: The Government of India has extended the tenure of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director Praveen Sood for a period of one year. The decision was formalized following the approval of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), based on the recommendations of a selection committee.

Sood, a 1986-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer belonging to the Karnataka cadre, assumed the role of CBI Director on May 25, 2023, for a scheduled term of two years.

The selection committee responsible for recommending the extension was headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and included Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, along with Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, officials confirmed. Their decision was reached during a meeting held on Monday. Subsequently, the ACC approved the proposal, granting Mr. Sood an additional year in his current position beyond his original term expiry date of May 24.

Prior to his appointment as the CBI Director, Sood held the position of Karnataka’s Director General of Police (DGP).

Born in 1964 in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, Sood entered the IPS at the age of 22, after graduating with a degree in civil engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi. His academic pursuits also include a post-graduation degree from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Bengaluru, and a further degree from the Maxwell School of Governance at Syracuse University in New York.

Known for his practical and involved leadership style, Sood has overseen the investigation of several significant cases involving high net-worth individuals and matters with inter-state and international implications.

During his tenure in Karnataka, Sood played a key role in strengthening the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) and the Interoperable Criminal Justice System (ICJS) in collaboration with the state’s judiciary.
