Central Govt Probes Alleged Discrimination Against Married Women at Foxconn’s iPhone Plant in Tamil Nadu

New Delhi, 27th June.  The Ministry of Labour and Employment has initiated an inquiry following widespread media coverage alleging that married women are being barred from employment at the Foxconn India Apple iPhone manufacturing facility. In response to these reports, the Ministry has formally requested a comprehensive report from the Labour Department of the Tamil Nadu Government.

Under Section 5 of the Equal Remuneration Act, 1976, which prohibits discrimination based on gender in employment practices, the Ministry underscores the imperative of gender equality in recruitment policies. As the primary authority for administering and enforcing this statute lies with the State Government, the Ministry’s directive seeks clarity on the alleged discriminatory practices.

Simultaneously, the Regional Chief Labour Commissioner has been instructed to furnish an objective report to the Ministry of Labour & Employment, Government of India, ensuring a thorough assessment of the factual basis surrounding these allegations.
