New Delhi/Jaunpur, 20th May: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Sub Divisional Inspector (SDI) of India Post and a driver for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹25,000 from a Branch Post Master in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh.

According to a statement issued by the agency on Tuesday, the arrests followed a trap laid by the CBI after receiving a complaint from the Branch Post Master of Seur Branch Office.

The SDI from the Madiyahu division allegedly conducted an inspection at the Seur Branch Office on May 15 and found a cash discrepancy. Instead of addressing the matter through official channels, the SDI demanded a bribe of ₹25,000 to overlook the shortage and ensure the Branch Post Master was not suspended. Despite the complainant submitting a clarification on May 17, the demand for bribe continued.

The CBI registered a case on Monday and subsequently caught the accused driver of the Mail Motor Service red-handed while he was collecting the bribe on behalf of the SDI. Both the SDI and the driver were later arrested and produced before the designated CBI court.

The probe agency has charged the accused with criminal conspiracy and corruption under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
