New Delhi, 20th June. In a significant move aimed at enhancing air connectivity and infrastructure, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved the Airports Authority of India’s proposal for the development of Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Varanasi.
The Varanasi Airport development project, estimated at Rs. 2869.65 crore, seeks to elevate the airport’s capacity to handle 9.9 million passengers per annum (MPPA), up from the current 3.9 MPPA.
Central to the plan is the construction of a new terminal building covering 75,000 sqm, designed to accommodate 6 MPPA and cater to 5000 Peak Hour Passengers (PHP). This modern facility will also showcase Varanasi’s rich cultural heritage.
Key elements of the Varanasi Airport project include extending the runway to 4075m x 45m dimensions and building a new apron capable of accommodating 20 aircraft. The initiative emphasizes environmental sustainability, integrating energy optimization, waste recycling, carbon footprint reduction, solar energy utilization, and natural daylighting strategies throughout planning, development, and operational phases.
The transformation of Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport into a green airport reflects India’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure development, strengthening connectivity and tourism in Varanasi.
