Ahmedabad, 18th August. Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah on Sunday distributed citizenship certificates to 188 refugees in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
Chief Minister of Gujarat Bhupendra Patel, and other dignitaries were present at the event.
In his address, Shah emphasized that the CAA is designed not merely to grant citizenship but to provide justice and rights to refugees. He criticized previous governments for their appeasement policies that left millions of refugees without their rights for generations. Shah said, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has corrected these injustices, giving refugees the recognition they deserve.
Shah highlighted that while the Opposition had promised citizenship to refugees at the time of partition, they failed to deliver on these promises. He stated that there is no greater injustice than denying citizenship to refugees due to appeasement politics.
He pointed out the discrepancy in the Opposition’s policies, which favored illegal infiltrators over lawful refugees.
Shah called on refugees to apply for citizenship confidently, assuring them that the CAA does not include provisions for criminal prosecution. He urged all refugees to embrace the opportunity provided by this law, which aims to provide them justice and honor.
Discussing historical context, Shah noted the decline in Hindu population in Bangladesh from 27% at the time of partition to just 9% today. He emphasized that India’s commitment under the Modi government is to offer a dignified life to those who sought refuge in India.
The Union Home Minister also criticized the Opposition for misleading refugees about the CAA and reaffirmed that the Modi government is dedicated to providing justice and implementing the law effectively.
He concluded by urging the refugees to reject misinformation and support the Modi government’s efforts to right past wrongs.
