London, 5th Sept. British prosecutors have discontinued the indecent assault charges against former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) announced on Thursday. Frank Ferguson, Head of the CPS’s Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division, said the decision followed a review of the evidence in the case.
“The CPS has a duty to keep all cases under continuous review, and we have decided that there is no longer a realistic prospect of conviction,” Ferguson stated. The charges, initially authorised two years ago, were linked to an alleged assault that took place in London in August 1996, involving a woman now in her 50s.
Weinstein, 72, has consistently denied any non-consensual sexual encounters. Despite his ongoing legal battles, he has faced significant convictions in the U.S. In February 2020, jurors in Manhattan found him guilty of rape, but the New York Court of Appeals overturned the conviction in April 2024, citing an unfair trial. Additionally, in 2022, a Los Angeles court convicted Weinstein of raping an actress in the city.
This decision by British authorities marks another chapter in the complex legal proceedings against Weinstein, who has faced numerous accusations of sexual misconduct over the years.
