Bombay HC Allows Release of “Hamare Baarah” Movie with Modifications

Mumbai, 19th June. The Bombay High Court has granted permission for the release of the film “Hamare Baarah,” starring Annu Kapoor, following negotiations where the filmmakers agreed to remove objectionable content. Originally slated for release on June 21, the movie faced legal challenges alleging distortion of the Quran and derogatory remarks towards Islam and the Muslim community.

A division bench of Justices BP Colabawalla and Firdosh Pooniwalla, after viewing the film, suggested modifications that both the filmmakers and petitioners accepted. Consequently, the court mandated these changes before allowing the movie’s release.

The filmmakers assured the court of implementing the alterations and obtaining certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). They now aim to release the movie on June 21, pending CBFC approval.

Additionally, the court imposed a fine of ₹5 lakh on the filmmakers for prematurely releasing the movie trailer without CBFC certification. This decision followed earlier delays and a subsequent Supreme Court intervention, which temporarily stayed the film’s release pending the high court’s final decision.

The Bombay High Court clarified that after reviewing the film, it found no content objectionable to the Quran or the Muslim community. It noted the film’s focus on women’s empowerment and affirmed the maturity of the Indian public in discerning media content.

On Wednesday, all parties involved submitted consent terms, confirming mutual agreement on removing contentious portions and including specified Quranic verses in the film. The petitioners expressed no further objection to the movie’s release under these conditions.
