Kolkata, 21st Jan. The body of a missing minor girl, suspected to be a victim of rape and murder, was recovered from a field at Basanti in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal on Monday evening. The eighth-grade student had been missing since January 9, and her family filed a missing person’s report on January 12, three days later.
According to district police superintendent Palash Chandra Dhali, the investigation is underway based on the complaint from the victim’s parents. “The body has been sent for a post-mortem,” he confirmed. Police began searching for the girl after the missing report was filed, and on Monday evening, a tip-off led them to the field near her home, where the body was recovered after digging a portion of the ground.
Sources said that the victim’s body was found without clothes, raising concerns about the brutal nature of the crime. The victim’s family claims she was called out by some local youths on the afternoon of January 9 and has been missing since. “We suspect she was gang-raped and then murdered. We demand the culprits be tracked and severely punished,” a family member said.
Tension escalated in the area following the discovery of the body, with local residents staging protests against the police for their handling of the case. This tragic incident comes on the heels of a life imprisonment sentence given to Sanjay Roy, the sole accused in the ghastly rape and murder of a woman junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata last year.
