Kolkata, 29th August. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) called for a bandh in Kolkata on Wednesday to protest against a recent rape case. The bandh had a mixed impact, with widespread disruptions reported across the city.
In response to the protests, the Mamata Banerjee-led government deployed a large police force, leading to clashes between BJP activists and the police in several areas.
President Droupadi Murmu expressed outrage over crimes against women and called for stricter measures to address them.
In a special article for PTI, President Murmu stated, “Enough is enough. It is time for India to become aware of such perversions and confront the mindset that views women as less powerful, less capable, and less intelligent.”
President Murmu said that the mentality of viewing women as objects contributes to crimes against them. She emphasized the responsibility to remove barriers that prevent women from overcoming their fears and achieving empowerment.
