BJP’s Kiran Choudhry Elected Unopposed in Haryana Rajya Sabha By-Poll

Chandigarh, 27th August. BJP leader Kiran Choudhry has been declared elected unopposed in the Rajya Sabha by-poll from Haryana after the deadline for withdrawal of nominations ended at 3 PM on Tuesday.

Choudhry, a former Haryana minister, filed her nomination for the by-poll last Wednesday. As the lone candidate, she was declared elected unopposed and received her certificate at 4:33 PM from Returning Officer Saket Kumar at the Haryana Vidhan Sabha secretariat. Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini was present during the occasion.

Choudhry’s victory comes after four rebel MLAs from the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) extended their support to her candidature. The by-poll was necessitated following Congress’s Deepender Singh Hooda’s election to the Lok Sabha from Rohtak, leaving his Rajya Sabha seat vacant.

Choudhry, who recently switched from the Congress to the BJP along with her daughter and former MP Shruti Choudhry, represented the Tosham seat in the Haryana Assembly. Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda had earlier stated that his party would not field a candidate for the Rajya Sabha seat, citing insufficient numbers.
