Wayanad, 26th March. In the upcoming election in Wayanad, where Rahul Gandhi won by a large margin in 2019, his opponent this time is BJP Kerala chief K Surendran, who believes that the Congress MP will face a similar fate as he did in Amethi.
K Surendran has been chosen by the BJP to contest in Wayanad against Rahul Gandhi, while the Left Front has nominated senior CPI leader Annie Raja.
The BJP’s central leadership announced Surendran’s candidacy on Sunday to challenge two prominent leaders of the INDIA bloc – Rahul Gandhi and Annie Raja. The NDA candidate only received a small 7.25% vote share in 2019.
Speaking to the media, K Surendran confidently stated that Rahul Gandhi will face the same destiny in Wayanad as he did in Amethi in 2019.
Wayanad is a constituency facing a development crisis, with Rahul Gandhi allegedly not doing much for the area. K Surendran believes he will meet the same fate in Wayanad as he did in Amethi last time.
In the previous election, Rahul Gandhi defeated CPI’s PP Suneer by over 4.31 lakh votes. The BJP ally BDJS’s chief Thushar Vellappally only received 78,816 votes in Wayanad.
“The central leadership has given me a responsibility to fight in the Wayanad constituency. The people of Wayanad will question why senior leaders of the INDIA bloc are contesting against each other in the same area,” K Surendran remarked.
Meanwhile, Annie Raja mentioned that the Left parties do not decide on candidates based on their opponents.
The BJP-led NDA was the last to announce their candidate for the Wayanad seat, with the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) announcing Ms. Raja’s candidacy much earlier.
“We are ahead in our campaigning efforts. We have engaged with all segments of society, and the positive response from voters boosts our confidence,” she added.
Wayanad, a mountainous district, is dealing with various issues such as an increase in human-animal conflicts, which could influence voters.
The ruling CPI(M) and the Opposition Congress in the state are pushing to amend the Wildlife (Protection) Act, a central law, to address animal attacks. The BJP and the Centre argue that the existing provisions are sufficient, and it is the state government’s responsibility to enforce them properly.
In 2019, Rahul Gandhi contested from Wayanad in addition to Amethi, where he lost to BJP’s Smriti Irani.
