BJP Wins Two ZP Seats Unopposed in Darrang; High Nomination Turnout in Dhubri and Dhemaji

Guwahati, April 13 ,2025: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has opened its account in the upcoming Assam Panchayat elections by winning two Zila Parishad (ZP) seats unopposed in Darrang district, delivering an early morale boost to the ruling alliance.

Bitopan Deka from the Rangamati ZP seat under Mangaldai LAC and Parismita Nath from the Hazarikapara-Kuruwa seat under Sipajhar LAC were declared winners uncontested. The declaration came on the final day of nomination filing, Friday, in the presence of State BJP president and local MP, Dilip Saikia, who accompanied the candidates along with six others.

The BJP, in alliance with the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), is contesting eight of Darrang’s 12 ZP seats, while the AGP has fielded candidates in the remaining four. Out of 75 Anchalik Panchayat (AP) seats, BJP has put up candidates in 49, with AGP contesting the other 26. The Congress party’s absence in several seats has raised eyebrows, with district-level leaders remaining unavailable for comment.

In Dhubri district, the final day of nominations witnessed a massive political mobilization. Of the total 2,710 nominations submitted, 2,264 were filed on Friday alone. The submissions included 16 for ZP seats, 71 for AP constituencies, and a staggering 2,623 for Gaon Panchayat posts—indicating heightened grassroots political participation.

Scrutiny of nominations in Dhubri will be conducted on April 16, with the final list published on April 17. The district will go to polls in the second phase on May 7, covering 750 Panchayat Ward Member seats.

Meanwhile, Dhemaji district is witnessing a flurry of political activity ahead of the first phase of polling on May 2. Candidates from BJP, AGP, Sanmilita Gana Sakti, United Bodo People’s Organisation (UBPO), Congress, Jana Jagaran Asom (JJA), and several independents have filed nominations across 65 Gaon Panchayats, 12 ZP, and 65 AP constituencies.

Dhemaji District Magistrate Rahul Suresh Javeer has invoked Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), enforcing strict restrictions around nomination centers to ensure a smooth election process. The district has 5,10,537 registered voters and 727 polling stations.
