New Delhi, 9th Feb. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has stormed back to power in Delhi after 27 years, securing a massive victory in the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections. Winning 48 out of 70 seats, the party has decisively ended the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) decade-long rule in the national capital. The outcome marks a dramatic political shift, with AAP suffering a significant loss, retaining only 22 seats, a sharp decline from its 2020 tally of 62 seats.
RP Singh Alleges Corruption, Calls for SIT Investigation
Following the BJP’s landslide victory, party leader RP Singh launched a scathing attack on the outgoing AAP government, accusing it of misgovernance and corruption over the past ten years. Speaking to the media, Singh stated:
“Delhi has been looted in the last 10 years. They showed many dreams, but everything was looted—whether it was in giving contracts for the water board, DTC, or any other department. There was loot everywhere.”
Singh further called for the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe financial irregularities and corruption under AAP’s tenure, stating that “shortcut politics will not work anymore”. His remarks indicate that the BJP government might prioritize investigations into AAP’s policies, particularly those linked to Delhi’s water, transport, and education sectors.
Parvesh Verma’s Historic Win Against Kejriwal
One of the biggest upsets in this election was Parvesh Verma’s victory over AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi constituency. The BJP candidate defeated the outgoing Chief Minister by over 4,000 votes, a symbolic and political blow to the AAP leadership.
Verma, son of former Delhi Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma, returned to his native village in Mundka after his victory, where he paid tributes to his late father. Speaking to supporters, he credited his win to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, stating:
“The people of Delhi have shown trust in PM Modi, and the credit for this victory goes to him. My father’s life is an inspiration for me, and his unfinished works will now be my resolves.”
Verma’s victory in New Delhi, a constituency that Kejriwal had dominated for years, is being seen as a major turning point in Delhi politics.
AAP’s Collapse and Internal Friction
The Aam Aadmi Party, which ruled Delhi for two consecutive terms, has suffered its worst electoral defeat since its formation. Losing key leaders, including Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia, has further weakened the party’s standing in Delhi politics.
Adding to AAP’s troubles, internal discord has surfaced within the party. AAP’s Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal publicly criticized outgoing CM Atishi for celebrating her individual victory in the Kalkaji seat despite AAP’s poor performance. Taking to X, Maliwal called Atishi’s celebration a “shameless display”, questioning how she could rejoice while the party had suffered such a massive defeat.
“The party lost, all the big leaders lost, and Atishi Marlena is celebrating like this?” Maliwal wrote.
Her comments reflect growing frustration within AAP as the party struggles to come to terms with its unexpected defeat.
Congress Faces Another Humiliating Defeat
For the third consecutive Delhi Assembly election, the Congress party failed to win a single seat. The party, which ruled Delhi for 15 years under Sheila Dikshit, was hoping for a revival, but the results indicate that Congress remains irrelevant in Delhi’s political landscape.
BJP leader RP Singh took a sharp jab at Congress, calling it a “parasite”, stating:
“Congress is continuously losing in Delhi. The people of Delhi have completely rejected them.”
The Congress-AAP decision to contest separately under the INDIA bloc may have further weakened their chances, splitting the anti-BJP vote and allowing BJP to consolidate its electoral gains.
The Road Ahead: BJP’s Delhi Agenda
With a two-thirds majority in the assembly, BJP’s return to power presents a new chapter for Delhi’s governance. The party is expected to focus on infrastructure development, law and order, and economic growth, aligning with PM Modi’s national vision.
With RP Singh calling for corruption probes into AAP’s policies, BJP’s first steps in government may involve a detailed review of previous administration decisions, particularly in sectors like healthcare, education, and water supply.
The 2025 Delhi Assembly elections have completely reshaped the political landscape of the capital. BJP’s resounding victory, AAP’s collapse, and Congress’s continued decline mark a major shift in voter sentiment.
As the new BJP government takes charge, Delhi awaits to see whether it will fulfill its promises of governance reforms and infrastructural development, or if AAP can regroup and stage a comeback in the future. One thing is clear—Delhi’s political dominance has shifted, and BJP is back in control.
