New Delhi, 8th Feb. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Saturday shut its party office doors in the national capital after suffering a massive defeat in the Delhi Assembly elections. The setback saw AAP supremo and former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, along with his former deputy Manish Sisodia, lose their respective seats.
A video circulating online shows a crowd standing outside AAP’s office, which had its brown-colored shutter pulled down. The party’s name and logo remained visible on a blue board and a black stone outside the premises.
Arvind Kejriwal lost his New Delhi stronghold to BJP’s Parvesh Verma, a former two-time Member of Parliament. Kejriwal, who had held the seat since 2013 when he defeated Congress veteran Sheila Dikshit, trailed behind Verma by around 1,200 votes, while Congress’ Sandeep Dikshit finished third.
Meanwhile, Manish Sisodia, AAP’s senior-most leader after Kejriwal, conceded defeat in Jangpura. “Party workers fought well; we all worked hard. People supported us too, but I lost by 600 votes. I congratulate the winning candidate and hope he serves the constituency well,” Sisodia said.
Sisodia, credited with transforming Delhi’s government schools during AAP’s first term, was arrested in February 2023 over alleged corruption in the now-scrapped Delhi liquor policy. Following his arrest, he resigned as deputy chief minister, and the liquor policy scandal became a major challenge for AAP in this election.
Despite the party’s overall poor performance, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi managed to retain the Kalkaji seat. Atishi, 43, secured victory over BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri and Congress’ Alka Lamba, winning by a margin of over 2,700 votes, as per the Election Commission.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has clinched power in Delhi after nearly three decades. As per the latest trends, BJP is leading in 46 seats, while AAP is ahead in 24. The Congress has failed to secure a lead in any constituency.
