New Delhi, 17th Aug. The BJP on Thursday announced its first list of 21 candidates for Chhattisgarh and 39 candidates for Madhya Pradesh for the upcoming assembly elections, which are yet to be announced.

Vijay Baghel, the party’s Durg MP, has been nominated to represent Patan, which is currently represented by Chhattisgarh Chief Minister and Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel.

The names were chosen at a meeting of the BJP’s Central Election Committee on Wednesday, which was presided over by party chief J P Nadda and attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers Rajnath Singh and Amit Shah, and other top figures.

In Chhattisgarh, the BJP has fielded Baghel from Patan, Bhulan Singh Maravi from Premnagar, Laxmi Rajwade from Bhatgaon, Shakuntala Singh Porthe from Pratappur (ST), Sarla Kosaria from Saraipali (SC), Alka Chandrakar from Khallari, Gita Ghasi Sahu from Khujji and Maniram Kashyap from Bastar (ST), among others.

In Madhya Pradesh, the BJP has fielded Sarla Vijendra Rawat from Sabalgarh, Priyanka Meena from Chachaoura, Lalita Yadav from Chhatarpur, Anchal Sonkar from Jabalpur Purba (SC), Nirmala Bhuriya from Petlawad, Bhanu Bhuriya from Jhabua (ST), Alok Sharma from Bhopal Uttar and Dhruv Narayan Singh from Bhopal Madhya, among others.

The party’s decision to release the first list of candidates so soon emphasizes the importance it places on the five state elections, the final round of assembly elections before the crucial Lok Sabha elections. Aside from Chhattisgarh and MP, Rajasthan, Telangana, and Mizoram will hold elections later this year.

The BJP is only in control in Madhya Pradesh and is striving hard to unseat the Congress government in Chhattisgarh.

In 2018, the BJP won only 15 of the 90 seats in the Chhattisgarh assembly, compared to 68 for the Congress, and 109 seats in the 230-member Madhya Pradesh assembly, compared to 114 for the Congress.
