Ahmedabad, 10th Nov. The BJP released its first list of 160 candidates for the two-phase elections to the 182-member Gujarat Assembly on Thursday, fielding Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel from his constituency Ghatlodia and dropping a number of sitting MLAs.

The party named its candidates for 84 of the 89 seats up for election in the first phase on December 1 and 76 of the 93 seats up for election in the second phase on December 5.

Union ministers Bhupender Yadav and Mansukh Mandaviya were joined by Gujarat BJP president C R Patil at a press conference in which Yadav announced the candidates chosen by the party’s Central Election Committee at its meeting on Wednesday.

According to Yadav, the list includes 69 sitting MLAs, indicating that a large number of incumbent legislators were excluded.

There are 14 women on the list, as well as 13 and 24 members of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, respectively.

He stated that a number of senior state leaders, including former Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and former Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel, have opted out of the race and have written to the party leadership to that effect.

The meeting was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other CEC members, including Union Ministers Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh, as well as the party’s national president J P Nadda, to finalize the candidates.

The BJP hopes to continue its unbroken winning streak in state assembly elections since 1995.

The Aam Aadmi Party’s entry has added a new dimension to the state’s traditional bipolar elections, with the BJP’s main challenger Congress facing a new round of defections as it works to regroup.
