Kolkata, 6th May. Amidst controversy surrounding a video alleging that women in Sandeshkhali filed harassment complaints against TMC leaders under BJP’s direction, the saffron party announced on Sunday that they intend to challenge the accusations in court.
In the video, a man claiming to be Gangadhar Kayal, a BJP mandal president in Sandeshkhali, was heard saying that the leader of the opposition in the West Bengal assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, is behind the alleged conspiracy.
The TMC released the video on social media on Saturday, claiming it supported their assertion of BJP’s involvement in the incident.
Denying the allegations, Mr. Adhikari, the leader of the opposition in the West Bengal assembly, stated that Mr. Kayal’s voice in the video was artificially generated.
Speaking to reporters in Purba Medinipur, Mr. Adhikari emphasized the numerous complaints filed by women in Sandeshkhali, stating that the TMC’s release of a doctored video would not absolve them of the accusations.
He mentioned that Mr. Kayal will soon approach the high court to demand an investigation against those who allegedly used his voice and the TMC for implicating him in the video.
Mr. Adhikari expressed his support for Mr. Kayal, stating that the BJP leadership and the local community stand by him and can see through the TMC’s tactics.
BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar claimed that the TMC engineered the video in response to the backlash over Sandeshkhali. He questioned why the video only referred to three women when there were around 600 complaints filed. Mr. Kayal filed a complaint with the CBI on Saturday, alleging that the video was manipulated.
During a campaign rally, TMC leader and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee suggested that the Sandeshkhali incident was preplanned by the BJP, although she admitted she had not watched the entire video.
The authenticity of the video shared by the TMC has not been independently verified by PTI.
TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee reiterated the party’s position at a press conference in Kolkata, condemning what he described as a shameless attempt to tarnish Bengal’s image ahead of the elections.
