Kolkata, 9th May. Hiran Chatterjee, the BJP nominee for the Ghatal Lok Sabha seat in West Bengal, has taken legal action against his opponent and sitting Trinamool Congress MP Deepak Adhikari, popularly known as Dev, over what he deems as a “slanderous” comment.
Chatterjee announced on Wednesday that he has filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Dev and intends to lodge a complaint with the Election Commission of India (ECI) as well.
The controversy ascended after Dev made allegations saying that Chatterjee and the BJP might conspire to implicate him in a murder case in their bid to secure victory in Ghatal. Dev claimed that a BJP worker might be killed in Keshpur within the next 10-12 days, and that Chatterjee could attempt to falsely implicate him.
In response, Chatterjee condemned Dev’s remarks, stating that he has already lodged an FIR against the Trinamool candidate at a local police station. He reassured BJP workers in Keshpur that they would be protected, expressing disbelief at the accusation of planning a murder and questioning the logic of publicizing such claims in advance.
Expressing his dismay as an actor at the defamatory comment made by another actor, Chatterjee emphasized the seriousness of the matter and his commitment to addressing it through legal channels.
The escalating tensions between the BJP and Trinamool in the run-up to the elections show the highly charged political atmosphere in West Bengal, where allegations and counter-allegations have become commonplace among rival candidates.
