New Delhi, 10th August.
A delegation of BJP MPs met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday to discuss their concerns regarding the Supreme Court’s recent observation on identifying the “creamy layer” among Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST).

Prime Minister Modi, following the meeting, reaffirmed his commitment to the welfare and empowerment of SC/ST communities. He stated on X, “Met a delegation of SC/ST MPs today. Reiterated our commitment and resolve for the welfare and empowerment of the SC/ST communities.”

The Supreme Court’s August 1 observation, made by Justice B R Gavai, suggested that states should develop policies to identify and exclude the creamy layer among SCs and STs from reservation benefits. This remark has caused concern among BJP MPs.

BJP Rajya Sabha member Sikander Kumar, who was part of the delegation, reported to PTI, “We were receiving numerous calls from people worried about the Supreme Court’s observation.” He added that the MPs conveyed their concerns to the Prime Minister, who assured them that the government would not allow the implementation of the court’s observation.

BJP MP Faggan Singh Kulaste confirmed that the delegation presented a memorandum requesting that the apex court’s recommendation be disregarded. Kulaste noted that the Prime Minister shared this sentiment and assured the MPs that the issue would be addressed and that the recommendation would not be applied to the SC and ST categories.
