Jaipur, 4th Feb. Three armed assailants shot dead the 28-year-old son of a former BJP booth president in Nimbahera, Chittorgarh on Thursday afternoon.

After police promised to make quick arrests, the protesting family consented to take the body for final rites on Friday.

According to police, a preliminary investigation indicates that rivalry was the reason for the murder of Vikas Aanjana, the son of Babu Lal Aanjana.

Vikas Aanjana also had four criminal cases filed against him, including one under the NDPS Act, according to police.

Aanjana was surrounded by three armed assailants in Kotwali police station area of Chittorgarh around 5pm on Thursday, said police.

“The assailants fired at him, and he fell down, bleeding. A team of police officers reached the spot immediately. Aanjana was rushed to the hospital, where he was declared brought dead. He had sustained eight bullet injuries,” said a police officer.

The incident occurred when Aanjana was returning from the residence of his friend Lalit Prajapat at Kesunda under Choti Sadari police station. Prajapat’s six-month-old daughter had died recently.

Two of Aanjana’s friends who were accompanying him managed to flee as the firing started, said police.

The murder sparked a protest by locals, mainly BJP workers and Babu Lal Aanjna, the party’s booth president, demanding that the accused be arrested immediately.

“The protesters were unwilling for the post-mortem to take place and then did not want to take the body. After our assurances of early arrests, the funeral was done on Friday,” said Udaipur Range IG Prafful Kumar.

“We have some concrete clues on the whereabouts of the absconding accused. We have also got some CCTV footage. The murder seems to be an outcome of some old rivalry,” added the IG.
