Kolkata, 10th May.
A local BJP leader from West Bengal’s Sandeshkhali, Gangadhar Kayal, has taken legal action by approaching a single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court, asserting that a purported sting-operation video circulating online is fabricated.

In the contentious video, Kayal purportedly implicates himself, suggesting that protests led by women against alleged sexual harassment by Trinamool Congress leaders were engineered by the BJP. However, Kayal vehemently denies the authenticity of the video, claiming it to be a malicious attempt to tarnish his reputation.

Justice Jay Sengupta has admitted Kayal’s petition, scheduling a hearing for May 14, a day following the fourth phase of Lok Sabha polls. The emergence of the video on May 4 prompted Kayal to escalate the matter further, approaching the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and alleging voice modulation through the use of Artificial Intelligence.

It’s worth noting that the CBI is already engaged in probing complaints of sexual harassment, illegal land acquisition, and extortion against certain Trinamool Congress leaders in Sandeshkhali.

The unfolding controversy occurs amidst heightened political tensions, with the ruling Trinamool Congress accusing the BJP of orchestrating the Sandeshkhali episode to undermine the state government’s credibility. The suspension of Sheikh Shahjahan, a central figure in the controversy, from the Trinamool Congress has exacerbated the political acrimony.

Observers speculate that the intervention of the Calcutta High Court will provide clarity regarding the authenticity of the disputed video, potentially dispelling confusion surrounding the contentious issue. The legal proceedings are anticipated to shed light on the veracity of the allegations and may have far-reaching implications on the ongoing political discourse in West Bengal.
