Chandigarh, 15th Sept. Senior BJP leader and former Minister Anil Vij said on Sunday that he will stake a claim for the Chief Minister’s position if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secures victory in the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections on October 5. This statement comes despite the party’s decision to field Nayab Singh Saini as the chief ministerial candidate.
Vij, a six-time MLA from Ambala Cantt, said, “I never sought anything from the party till today… People from Haryana, including those in Ambala, have been telling me that I am the senior-most, and questioning why I never became CM. Based on people’s demand and my seniority, I will stake my claim for the chief ministership this time.”
Vij said that while it is ultimately up to the party leadership to decide, he firmly believes that if given the opportunity, he would transform Haryana’s “takdeer and tasveer” (destiny and face). He reiterated that he had never previously asked the party for any position but felt compelled to take this step following encouragement from the public.
When questioned about the timing of his decision and the fact that Saini has already been named the BJP’s chief ministerial face, Vij responded, “There is no bar on staking a claim. I will make my claim, and the party will decide.”
Notably, Nayab Singh Saini replaced Manohar Lal Khattar as the Chief Minister in March. Haryana will vote for its 90 Assembly seats on October 5, and the results will be declared on October 8.
