BJP Fields Three Former Independent MLAs in Upcoming Assembly Bypolls

Shimla, 14th June. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has decided to field three former Independent MLAs who recently joined the party after resigning from the Vidhan Sabha. These MLAs had earlier voted in favor of the BJP candidate in the Rajya Sabha elections. The BJP candidates list, released on Thursday, includes Ashish Sharma (Hamirpur), Hoshiyar Singh (Dehra), and K L Thakur (Nalagarh). The bypolls for these seats are scheduled for July 10.

These three Independents, alongside six Congress rebels, supported BJP candidate Harsh Mahajan in the February 27 Rajya Sabha elections, leading to his victory. They resigned from their assembly positions on March 22, with their resignations being accepted by Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania on June 3, after the by-elections to six other seats and the Lok Sabha elections were conducted.

The recent bypolls, whose results were declared on June 4, saw the Congress winning four seats and the BJP securing two. Despite this setback, the BJP has opted to field the three former Independents again, taking a calculated risk.

Both the BJP and Congress have already appointed in-charges for the upcoming assembly bypolls in the three constituencies.

K L Thakur, a two-time MLA from Nalagarh, previously won in 2012 on a BJP ticket and in 2022 as an Independent. Hoshiyar Singh, also a two-time MLA from Dehra, secured victories in the 2017 and 2022 elections as an Independent. Ashish Sharma is a first-time MLA from Hamirpur.
