New Delhi, 26th March.
The BJP has decided not to give a ticket to a six-time MP from Karnataka, following his controversial remarks about the party’s goal of winning 400 seats in the Lok Sabha. This move once again shows that leaders who make impromptu comments that embarrass the party’s leadership may lose out on opportunities.

Anantkumar Hegde, a BJP MP from Karnataka, has won the Uttara Kannada Lok Sabha seat six times in the last 28 years. Known for his controversial speeches, Hegde caused a stir when he suggested that the BJP’s target of 400 seats was to change the Constitution.

Accusing the Congress of altering the Constitution to suppress Hindus, he called for a rewrite of the Constitution. Hegde emphasized that to make these changes, the BJP would need a two-thirds majority in the Rajya Sabha and in the states.

Despite the Opposition’s criticism of Hegde’s comments, the BJP distanced itself, stating that his remarks were personal views. It was clear that the six-time MP would not be given a ticket. He lobbied to keep his seat, but the decision had been made.

Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri, a six-time MLA and former Speaker of the Karnataka Assembly, has been chosen to replace Hegde in the BJP stronghold.

The BJP’s candidate selection this time shows a trend – leaders known for making hateful and controversial statements are not being chosen. Before Hegde, other MPs like Pragya Singh Thakur, Ramesh Bidhuri, and Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma were also denied tickets despite being sitting MPs.

A party leader mentioned that while winning is important, the party is also considering candidates who have caused embarrassment with their statements.

The denial of tickets to such candidates sends a message that maintaining decorum in public life is crucial. The Prime Minister has previously warned party leaders not to make controversial statements.
