New Delhi, 8th Feb. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has crossed the majority mark in the Delhi Assembly elections as early trends show the party surging ahead. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which is eyeing a fourth consecutive term, is trailing in key constituencies, including those of its top leaders.
At 8:30 am, AAP initially led, but the BJP soon gained ground in a closely contested race. Congress, which was predicted to face another wipeout, is leading in one seat.
BJP Poised for Victory, AAP Faces Setback
Exit polls had predicted a BJP victory, with Chanakya Strategies forecasting 39-44 seats for the party and DV Research projecting 36-44. AAP was expected to secure 25-34 seats, while Congress was predicted to win up to three.
Delhi Chief Minister Atishi expressed confidence in AAP’s victory, calling the election a fight between “good and evil” and asserting that Arvind Kejriwal would return as chief minister for a fourth term. However, early trends indicate that Mr. Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, and Atishi are trailing from their respective seats.
Congress Eyes a Comeback
Congress, which ruled Delhi for 15 years before AAP’s rise, has shown signs of a revival, leading in Badli. Sandeep Dikshit, the party’s candidate from the New Delhi seat, remained uncertain about a post-poll alliance with AAP, stating that the decision rested with the party’s high command.
Tight Security as Counting Continues
The counting of votes for all 70 assembly constituencies began amid tight security at 19 locations across Delhi. The voter turnout in 2025 stood lower than in the previous elections, with a dip from 67.47% in 2015 to 62.82% in 2020.
As counting progresses, the BJP appears poised for a return to power in Delhi, while AAP struggles to maintain its hold on the capital.
