Rampur, 8th Dec. The BJP won the Rampur Sadar assembly seat for the first time on Thursday, with Akash Saxena defeating his closest Samajwadi Party rival Asim Raja. After the SP leader was sentenced to three years in prison in a hate speech case and subsequently disqualified as MLA, a bypoll to the Rampur Sadar seat, considered an Azam Khan stronghold, was required.

The Returning Officer handed over the winner’s certificate to Saxena, who won by a margin of 33,702 votes.

The BJP has won the Rampur Sadar assembly seat for the first time.

Because of his conviction, Azam Khan will be unable to run for office for the next six years.
