Patna, 5th Sept. The Bihar Police has introduced a new initiative, Safe Travel, aimed at ensuring the safety of women travelling on the road. Part of the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS), this initiative will be launched in six districts — Patna, Gaya, Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur, Begusarai, and Nalanda — with plans for a statewide rollout by September 15.
Bihar becomes the third state, following Telangana and Haryana, to implement such a system. The Safe Travel initiative allows women to have their journeys monitored by the police, both physically and digitally, ensuring they reach their destination safely.
How Safe Travel Works:
- Dial 112: Women travellers can dial the emergency number 112 before their journey begins. Police will then track the vehicle and maintain contact with them throughout the trip.
- Vehicle details and live location will be shared with the police, ensuring constant vigilance.
- If a woman’s phone becomes unreachable, an emergency response vehicle is immediately dispatched to locate her.
- Local police stations along the route will be alerted, and support will be provided 24/7 throughout the journey.
As Bihar prepares for the upcoming festival season, when more women are likely to travel late at night, this initiative will offer a significant boost to their confidence. Nirmal Kumar Azad, Bihar’s Additional Director General of Police (Technical and Wireless), remarked, “This initiative will boost the confidence of women travellers, especially with the increased travel during festivals.”
