Patna, 8th August. The Bihar government has mandated all district magistrates (DMs) to ensure that unregistered temples, mutts, and trusts within their jurisdictions are registered and that their immovable assets are reported to the Bihar State Board of Religious Trusts (BSBRT).
State Law Minister Nitin Nabin announced on Thursday that the DMs are to prioritize this registration process and ensure that details of the immovable assets of all registered entities are submitted to the BSBRT for online publication.
As of now, only 18 districts have complied with this directive. The Bihar Hindu Religious Trusts Act of 1950 requires all public religious institutions to be registered with the BSBRT. Failure to comply, especially in cases of illegal property transactions, will result in strict action.
A high-level meeting with officials from the Law and Revenue and Land Reforms departments will be held to address these issues. The move aims to safeguard temple and trust properties from unauthorized claims.
Currently, there are about 2,512 unregistered temples and mutts in Bihar, managing 4,321.64 acres, while 2,499 registered entities hold over 18,456 acres. Districts with significant numbers of unregistered entities include Vaishali (438), Kaimur Bhabhua (307), and West Champaran (273).
