New Delhi, 18th Dec. The Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS), India’s ambitious orbiting human spaceflight platform in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), is set to propel the nation’s space exploration capabilities to new heights. The initiative aims to support medium to long-duration human spaceflight missions and bolster India’s sustained human space program.

In a written reply to the Lok Sabha today, Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology and other portfolios, outlined the scope and timeline of BAS. “BAS will comprise multiple modules equipped with cutting-edge technology for advanced scientific research and technology development in a microgravity environment, aligned with national priorities and societal applications,” he stated.

The BAS project is closely tied to the expanded Gaganyaan Programme, which now includes precursor missions for the station’s development. The first module, BAS-01, is slated for launch in 2028, with the full station becoming operational by 2035.

Dr. Singh emphasized that BAS would be integral to India’s efforts in achieving self-reliance in space exploration while offering opportunities for advancements in science and technology. Like other international space stations, BAS will foster critical research in areas such as biology, physics, and material sciences in space conditions, enabling innovations for societal benefit.

This milestone development reinforces India’s growing presence in the global space exploration arena, as BAS promises to serve as a hub for cutting-edge research, international collaboration, and advancements in space technology.
