Dhaka, 24th Oct. Bangladeshi author and activist Taslima Nasreen expressed her heartfelt gratitude to Union Home Minister Amit Shah after the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) granted an extension to her India residency permit. The news comes following her public appeal to Shah on October 21, in which she requested the extension that had been pending since July 22.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Nasreen shared, “A world of thanks,” tagging the home minister. Her appeal underscored her long-standing connection to India, which she described as her second home for the past two decades.

“Dear Amit Shah ji, Namaskar. I live in India because I love this great country. It has been my second home for the last 20 years. But the Ministry of Home Affairs has not been extending my residence permit since July 22. I’m so worried. I would be so grateful to you if you let me stay. Warm regards,” Nasreen wrote prior to the permit extension.

Nasreen, known for her controversial novel Lajja, which has been banned in Bangladesh, fled her home country two decades ago due to threats against her life for her outspoken views on women’s rights and secularism.

In a separate post earlier today, she referred to the interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus as “illegal.”

This remark followed Yunus’s swearing-in as head of the Bangladeshi interim government in August 2024 after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country amid widespread protests. The protests initially ignited over government job quotas but escalated into demands for Hasina’s resignation after 15 years in power.

“Sheikh Hasina did not resign from her prime minister post and she is still alive. Therefore, Yunus’s government is illegal,” Nasreen stated on X.
