New Delhi, 30th Nov. India’s Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar has expressed deep concern over the ongoing violence against minorities in Bangladesh. Speaking in the Lok Sabha on Friday, Jaishankar stated that since the departure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024, there have been numerous attacks on Hindus and other minority communities. Reports of attacks on temples and Durga Puja pandals surfaced during the festival season.
The Indian government has officially raised concerns with the Bangladesh government regarding these incidents. Jaishankar emphasized that the responsibility for ensuring the safety of all minorities in Bangladesh lies with the Bangladeshi government.
The issue has gained further traction with the arrest of former ISKCON priest Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, who was charged with desecrating the national flag during a rally in October. He has also been accused of sedition. His arrest has sparked protests and unrest in Bangladesh.
Several Indian political figures, including opposition leaders, have voiced concerns over his arrest and have urged the Narendra Modi government to intervene. Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has also supported the detained Hindu cleric, calling his arrest wrongful and demanding his immediate release. She further urged the Bangladeshi government to protect religious and ethnic minorities, who have faced violence since her ouster in August.
