Bangladesh Editors’ Council Slams Gag Clause in Anti-Terrorism Ordinance

Dhaka, 20th May: The Bangladesh Editors’ Council has raised strong objections to a new gag clause inserted into the Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Ordinance 2025, warning that it threatens press freedom and the right to free expression.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the council expressed “grave concern” over Clause (e) of Section 20(b)(1), introduced by a gazette notification on May 12. The new clause prohibits any publicity in favor of the now-banned Awami League, including through the press, publications, social or mass media, rallies, or press conferences.

The provision was introduced by the interim government, which came to power earlier this year. The Editors’ Council questioned the legitimacy of such a sweeping restriction being enacted under a non-elected administration.

“The clause is alarming and leaves significant scope for misuse. It sets a dangerous precedent by allowing curbs on media under the guise of anti-terrorism,” the council said. It also noted that the restriction goes beyond the legal boundaries of democratic governance and free speech, and called for its immediate suspension and thorough reconsideration.
