Dhaka, 18th Oct. Bangladesh’s interim government has announced the cancellation of the annual birth anniversary celebration of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, along with several other national holidays introduced by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus made the announcement via X, stating that eight national holidays established under Hasina’s administration would be revoked.
The cancelled holidays include key commemorative dates:
- Historic March 7 Day
- Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s birthday on March 17
- The birth anniversary of Sheikh Hasina’s brother on August 5
- The birth anniversary of Sheikh Hasina’s mother on August 8
- The death anniversary of Mujibur Rahman on August 15
- The birthday of Sheikh Hasina’s younger brother on October 18
- National Constitution Day on November 4
- Smart Bangladesh Day on December 12
Yunus, a Nobel Peace Prize winner and microfinance pioneer, stepped into the role of Chief Adviser after a student-led uprising that resulted in the ousting of Sheikh Hasina in August. He now leads a temporary administration aimed at addressing what he describes as the “extremely tough” challenge of restoring democratic institutions in Bangladesh.
The decision to cancel these holidays has sparked discussions about the future of commemorative practices in the country and the interim government’s approach to national identity and history.
