Mumbai, 30th July. Police have filed an attempt to murder case against the former husband of a 50-year-old American woman who was discovered tied to a tree with an iron chain in a forest in Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg district. The case was initiated based on a note written by the woman while she was hospitalized, according to a senior police official.
The woman, identified as Lalita Kayi, was found by a shepherd on Saturday evening in Sonurli village after he heard her cries for help. The shepherd alerted the police upon discovering her chained and in distress. The police recovered her Aadhaar card with a Tamil Nadu address and a photocopy of her United States passport. Kayi has been in India for the past decade, as her visa had expired.
She was transferred to a hospital in neighboring Goa for medical treatment. Doctors reported that Kayi suffers from psychiatric issues, and police found medical prescriptions in her possession indicating ongoing treatment for a psychiatric condition. The police suspect she may be suffering from schizophrenia.
Superintendent of Police Saurabh Agrawal stated, “Based on the note written by the woman at the hospital, a case has been registered against her former husband under charges of attempted murder, act endangering life or personal safety of others, and wrongful confinement under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).”
The woman’s statement is yet to be officially recorded, but the police have already launched an investigation into the matter. “We are verifying the claims made in her note and trying to determine if her allegations against her former husband are accurate,” Agrawal added.
Police teams are currently in Tamil Nadu and Goa to locate her former husband and other relatives for further investigation.
