Guwahati, 11th August. Assam Police are on high alert along the India-Bangladesh border to prevent illegal entry into the state, in response to ongoing unrest in Bangladesh, Director General of Police (DGP) G P Singh announced. The Centre has issued clear directives to prevent unauthorized crossings from Bangladesh.
“The Border Security Force (BSF) is the primary defense along the border, while Assam Police, as the secondary line of defense, is also on high alert,” Singh told reporters during a book launch on Saturday. He noted that Indian passport holders, including students and traders, will be permitted entry if their documents are verified as valid.
Additionally, the Centre has mandated that citizens of Bangladesh will be escorted back after verification of their passports and visas via a safe corridor.
The DGP assured that there have been no unauthorized entries into the state, and Assam Police are conducting joint patrols with the BSF.
Regarding Independence Day celebrations, Singh stated that stringent security measures are in place across the state. Superintendents of Police (SPs) have been instructed to enhance security in parade grounds.
Singh also addressed recent security concerns in Upper Assam, where he reviewed arrangements following reports of ULFA (I) militants near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border. He emphasized coordination with the police, army, CRPF, and Assam Rifles to neutralize the militant group.
The DGP urged ULFA (I) to avoid violence and disturbances, highlighting the state’s economic progress due to increased investments. He reiterated the willingness of both central and state governments to engage in dialogue with the outfit if they are open to negotiations.
