Guwahati, 17th August. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Geological Survey of India (GSI) to implement an experimental regional Landslide Early Warning System (LEWS). This initiative aims to address the recurring issue of landslides in Assam.
The MoU was formalized on Friday by ASDMA CEO Gyanendra Dev Tripathi and Siladitya Sengupta, Deputy Director General, SU: Assam, GSI. The agreement seeks to enhance institutional cooperation and establish an operational model for landslide early warning in Dima Hasao and Cachar districts, with plans for statewide expansion.
Landslides in Assam’s hilly terrains, including Dima Hasao, Karbi Anglong, Cachar, Karimganj, and Kamrup Metropolitan districts, have caused significant damage, including loss of lives, destruction of homes, and infrastructure. The problem often goes unaddressed until it manifests, with previous responses being ad-hoc.
The LEWS will utilize static landslide susceptibility and hazard maps, along with dynamic rainfall forecasts, to provide more accurate and timely warnings. The system aims to reduce risks and improve response mechanisms to landslide hazards.
Additionally, the GSI has introduced the ‘Bhooskhalan’ app, which allows users to report landslide incidents to aid in disaster prediction and management. The app complements GSI’s online portal, ‘Bhusanket’, which provides updates on landslides across India.
